Storm and danger trees in Courtenay

When is a standing tree actually dangerous?
Not every leaning tree is. We look at whether the lean is new, whether the ground on the upslope side has lifted, and whether the top has died back. Then we check what's underneath — your house, a fence, a shed — in case it comes down. Dry coastal summers leave many western redcedar trees with dead tops. We anchor and climb a brittle dead top using specialized techniques compared to live timber.
Does a hazardous tree still need a permit?
The City of Courtenay issues hazardous tree permits at no charge. The City waives the fee rather than the permit itself, so you still file paperwork using the measurements we provide. You can check the tree bylaws that apply here to see if your storm-damaged stem needs a permit before cutting.
