Tree removal in Cumberland

Cumberland is an incorporated village of about 4,447 people east of Perseverance Creek, and the Village has adopted no tree protection bylaw for private property. A tree on private land inside Cumberland comes down without a municipal permit, which is not true anywhere else in the Comox Valley.

This is the one address in the valley where the paperwork is not the first question. It is also the one where the tree behind the fence is usually part of a forest rather than part of a garden.

Does that mean you can take any tree down?

On private land in the village, yes, as far as the municipality goes. We still check whether your property runs into a watercourse or a slope that brings other rules with it, and we still tell you if we think a tree is worth keeping. The Village has been reviewing private-property tree protection for some time, so we confirm the current position rather than quoting last year's answer.

What is different about a forest-edge lot?

A tree grown in a stand puts its weight up high and its roots into ground shared with everything around it. Take one out of the middle of a group and the ones left behind are suddenly exposed. On lots backing onto standing timber we will usually talk you through taking a group down in one visit rather than one tree a year.

What happens to the wood once it's down?

Brush goes through the chipper on site, and rounds are either stacked where you want them or hauled away — you tell us which before the saw starts. A forest-edge lot often produces more wood in one visit than a single garden tree would, simply because we are usually clearing more than one stem at a time. We rake the drop zone before we leave, and the quote lists the removal, the hauling and any stump work as separate lines so you can see what each one costs.
