Stump grinding in Courtenay
Stump grinding takes the stump and the buttress roots to roughly 20 to 30 centimetres below grade, which is enough for turf, paving or a replanted tree. Grinding across Courtenay, Comox and Cumberland runs $200 to $600, and is quoted separately from the removal that comes first.
Leaving the stump is a real option and we will not talk you out of it. Some people want the ground flat, some want somewhere to put a planter. It only becomes a decision when you want to build, pave or plant over the spot.
How deep do we go?
Deep enough for what you are putting on top. Turf needs less than a driveway. Tell us the plan for the ground and we will set the depth to it rather than grinding to a number that means nothing to you.
What happens to the grindings?
They come out as a pile of chip and soil, several times the volume of the stump. We can rake them back into the hole so it settles level, or take them away. Left in place they will drop over the first winter, so top the spot up in spring before you seed it.
Can you plant a new tree in the same hole?
Not straight into the grindings. They are mostly wood, and wood pulls nitrogen out of the soil as it breaks down. Dig them out, backfill with soil, and plant beside the old stump rather than into it if you have the room.
People also ask
Do you need access for a machine?
Yes. A grinder needs about a metre of gate width; tell us if the only way in is through the house.
Can you grind a stump we did not remove?
Yes, and it is the same price.
Will the roots keep growing?
No. Once the stump is ground out the root system dies back on its own.
